The Filmore, Philadelphia, PA - Sept 30, 2024
Marianas Trench made their return to Philadelphia for the first time in 5 years with their “The Force of Nature” Tour, and it was apparent through every point of the night fans were thrilled to have them back. The Canadian pop-rock band most known for their breakout hits in the early 2000’s including “Break My Heart,” “Fallout,” and “Stutter” proved they’re stronger and just as relevant as they were 5 to 10 years ago. While it may have appeared at first glance that the night would be a walk down memory lane for Millenials with Cassadee Pope (formally of Hey Monday) joining the tour as an opener, Marianas Trench is as fresh as ever.
The band, made up of members Josh Ramsey, Matt Webb, Mike Ayley, and Ian Casselman, have an overall timeless quality to them. A sound and image you could drop in to the 80’s or present day and have no problem believing they’re a top artist of that time. Lead singer Josh Ramsey’s voice brought their iconic sound to life with pitch perfect vocals from start to finish. Ramsey’s front man star power is something to be envied throughout the industry. A highlight of the show was Josh running through the audience while singing “Haven’t Had Enough” stopping at different points of the crowd, giving fans an as close up as you can get interaction with the singer. The crowd was also clearly thrilled when past touring member Royce Whittaker surprised the band and ran out on stage to join them for “Fallout” on guitar.
The bands interactions with the audience made for my personal favorite kind of concert to attend; one where you feel like your hanging out with the artists as friends in someone’s basement. There was no lack of personalization to the crowd in attendance with Josh speaking directly to certain members through the show.
The bands banter with each other also added to the fun. “That’s right you heard it here first, we’re strictly profess,” Ramsey joked to the audience after the band took a moment to figure out what song they were playing next.
The set list included a mix of classics as well as a number off of their new album “Haven”that dropped earlier this year, including “Down to You,” “ A Normal Life,” and “Turn and Run.”
